Garden City, NY- The NFHCA No. 8 Adelphi University field hockey program picked up it's first Northeast-10 conference victory Saturday evening, defeating No. 9 Merrimack College 3-2 in their second overtime game this week. The Panthers roll to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in league play as the Warriors drop to 5-3 and pick up their first loss in the conference.
Mary Plotas scored her third gamewinner of the season and ninth goal of the year off a pass from
Molly Cuevas just two minutes into overtime.
Olivia Nowokunski and
Briana Rubenstein were responsible for the first two Panther goals.
The visitors were the first to light up the scoreboard as Rylee Hammond found the back of the Brown and Gold cage on an open net to take a 1-0 lead sixteen minutes into the first half. After twelve minutes Adelphi scored on a Nowokunski-Cuevas combo to tie the game at one apiece to head into the locker room. Coming off the half, Rubenstein was awarded a penalty stroke which she placed in the back of the Warrior cage for a 2-1 lead.
Unsatisfied with the score, Merrimack's Taylor Simpson blasted a shot to the back left corner past
Kelly Serrao to once again tie the game. As regulation expired both teams prepared to head into overtime. Merrimack was unable to get any shots off, but Adelphi had three opportunities on which the last one handed them their first NE-10 victory.
"The Northeast-10 is incredibly competitve and every game is anyones game," said Head Coach
Gloria O'Connor. "I credit our girls for fighting back and being in the game. We need to focus on getting better every game and prepare for next weekend against American International College.
