Two First Half Goals Lead Women's Soccer to Win Versus American International, 2-0

Monica DiDonato and Taylor Salmon scored a goal each in today's 2-0 triumph.

Garden City, NY – The Adelphi University women's soccer team picked up late-season, 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference win against visiting American International earlier today. It marked the 11th win of the season, all of which the Panthers have held their opponents scoreless.

Adelphi (11-4-1/8-4-1 NE-10) controlled possession for most of the first period in its own end, outshooting the Yellow Jackets (4-10-1/4-8-1 NE-10) 8-2. Monica DiDonato scored the first strike of the half in the 22nd minute by swinging in a cross from the right flank that faded into the backside of the net. Nearly eight minutes later, Taylor Salmon put forth a shot from a direct kick about 30 yards outs that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down into the goal.

The Brown and Gold went into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and in the corner kicks column. Samantha Tabak made two saves for American International while Sam Whitney did not face a shot on-target during the first 45 minutes.

Whitney made her first save of the game in the 57th minute, diving to her left to stop a bicycle kick attempt from Meimi Tomochika. Salmon nearly put the Panthers up 3-0 with her second goal of the game six minutes later, however, Tabak made a jumping save to push the ball out of bounds on the direct kick.

The two first half goals stood up for the Brown and Gold as the only tallies of the contest despite seven corner kicks and eight more shots in the second period. Whitney needed to make one save for her eighth shutout of the year while Tabak made six for American International in the effort.

The 2014 regular season concludes this Saturday with Adelphi hosting Stonehill for a league match scheduled for 4:00 pm. The contest will also mark "Senior Day" for the Panthers.
