North Andover, MA – Seven saves from senior keeper
Sam Whitney and a first half penalty kick gave the Adelphi University women's soccer team a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory at Merrimack, the squad's third straight win and fourth in the last five contests.
Coming up from her backline position, senior
Donna Liotine scored her fourth penalty kick of the season to give the Panthers (10-4-1/7-4-1 NE-10) a 1-0 lead towards the end of the first half. Prior to Liotine's goal, Whitney saved a Warrior (6-8-2/2-8-2 NE-10) penalty kick attempt from Jenna Savi.
Merrimack controlled the lead in shot attempts, 7-5, during the first half while the Panthers led 2-1 in corner kicks. Whitney made six of her stops between the posts during the first 45 minutes.
The host Warriors finished with a 14-12 shot advantage at the end of the game as both teams took seven shots attempts in the second stanza. Savi along with Andrea Rego both looked to even the match in the 88th minute, however, Savi's attempt was blocked while Rego struck her shot high of the net.
Warrior forward Sara Boucher created six shots for the contest while Liotine led the Panthers behind three shots. Molly Meehan made three saves, two in the second half, for Merrimack. Whitney needed just one save in the second half after a busy first period.
The Brown and Gold return to Motamed Field for the final two games of the regular season starting this Wednesday versus American International. The league match is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
