Field Hockey's Win Streak Snapped by Stonehill In 5-4 OT Decision

Garden City, NY - The No. 7 Adelphi University field hockey team hosted No. 4 Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action Saturday afternoon. After drawing to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation, the Panthers were handed their first conference loss by the Skyhawks with a 5-4 decision in overtime.  Adelphi posts a 9-3 overall record and registers their first loss in league play to stand at 4-1, as Stonehill improves to 9-2 and 4-1 in the NE-10.

Olivia Nowokunski led the offense for the Brown and Gold, scoring the first and last Panther goal as teammates Lena Pollich and Samantha Nizich were responsible for the goals in between. Kelly Serrao picked up 11 saves in the Adelphi cage with help from Briana Rubenstein and Rachel Colvin, who collected three and one defensive save, respectively.

The Skyhawks were the first to strike just 13 minutes into the first half on a scramble play in front of the net but Nowokunski notched her first goal of the day just a minute later to tie the game at one apiece. The score would remain at 1-1 as both teams broke for the half. Early in the second half Adelphi took a 2-1 lead on an unassisted Pollich goal but the Purple and White grabbed back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 goal.

Tying the game for the third time was Nizich off a pass from Arielle Theofield with under 15 minutes left in the game. As regulation time wound down, Nowokunski found a way past Stonehill goalkeeper Elizabeth Genovese to regain a 4-3 lead. Leading scorer for the Skyhawks Erika Kelly reciprocated the Panther goal scoring her second of the game for the 4-4 tie as time expired.

In overtime, Adelphi had a 2-0 and 3-1 penalty corner and shot advantage, respectively. Striking for the Stonehill gamewinner was Kelly once more, who drew an open net after half of overtime had passed.

The Panthers will return to Motamed Field on Wednesday, October 29 under the lights for a repeat matchup against cross-town rivals LIU Post at 7 p.m.
