Garden City, N.Y. - On the strength of a combined 23 kills from
Haley Blunt and
Kaitlyn DeStefano, the Adelphi University volleyball team (11-9, 8-0 NE-10) ran their win streak to 11 games on Saturday, October 18 with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-13) victory over Saint Michael's College. With the loss, the visiting Purple Knights fall to 5-10 overall and 0-8 in the Northeast-10.
The Brown and Gold scored the last six points of the first set to post a 25-14 victory behind a .379 hitting percentage. Blunt led the effort with five kills on a .556 percentage while Megan Manierski passed out 12 assists. The defense accumulated five total blocks, and DeStefano had a hand on three of them. In the second, the Purple Knights aimed to even the match at one game apiece in the second set by opening up a 7-1 lead. However, the Panthers continued to chip away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 17-17 after a kill from Mandy Stanislovaitis. Adelphi rallied off a 8-4 run to secure a 25-21 win as DeStefano accounted for four kills to put the Panthers up 2-0. The third set was tight at the start, as a DeStefano service error knotted the game at seven. However, DeStefano responded with a kill sparking a 3-0 Panther spurt that turned into a 18-11 Brown and Gold lead on another DeStefano hammer. The Purple Knights would get no closer then that and eventually fell 25-13.
Blunt led the Panther offense with 12 kills, while DeStefano chipped in 11 to go along with a total of five blocks (two solo).
Samantha Breidenbach was also strong at the net with four blocks of her own (two solo), while
Megan Manierski picked up a game-high 22 set assists in just two sets of action. Defensively,
Sierra Crook set the tone with 20 digs, while Stanislovaitis posted 11.
Adelphi returns to action on October 24 when they take the drive up to New Hampshire for a a two game trip to Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire.
