Colchester, VT – Senior back
John Sabal scored the overtime, game-winner less than two minutes into the extra period to lift the Adelphi University men's soccer team 3-2 at Northeast-10 conference rival Saint Michael's earlier today.
A perfect time for Sabal to score his first goal of the season, the senior played a through ball from classmate
Juan Aguiar that set him up one-on-one versus the goalie and finishing on the lower right side for the clinching strike for the Brown and Gold (7-4/5-3 NE-10).
The host Purple Knights (7-5/3-5 NE-10) gained the early 1-0 advantage in the eighth minute as Philip McCormick accounted for the tally. However, the Panthers continued to press and notched the equalizer in the 24 minute with
Caelan Hueber finishing a
Diego Zuniga pass. In the next minute, Hueber pushed the Brown and Gold ahead with an unassisted strike.
Adelphi held into the beginning portion of the second half before Saint Michael's tied the game at 2-2 in the 62
nd minute. O.J. Rivas was on the receiving end of a pass from Simon Rodriguez in a front of the net scramble that wound up in the lower left net.
The Brown and Gold outshot the Purple Knights 27-14 while also manufacturing nine corners compared to yielding five.
"Proud of my guys to compete away from and get a win," said head coach
Carlo Acquista. "Saint Michael's is a dangerous and well coached team who at any moment can score goals. We will now get ready for New Haven this Tuesday."
The Panthers are on the road again this Tuesday, traveling to West Haven, CT to face the Chargers of New Haven for a 3:30 pm league match.
