Garden City, NY – Freshman forward Amanda Arnold scored the game-winner for Assumption just a little more than a minute into the second overtime to give Adelphi University women's soccer team its first loss of the season, 3-2 in double overtime in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown earlier this evening on Motamed Field.
The NSCAA ninth ranked Panthers (6-1-1/3-1-1 NE-10) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when freshman
Jeanine Nunez chipped a ball from six yards out over the reach of Greyhound (6-1/5-0 NE-10) goalie Rachel Edgin.
Samantha Lanza picked up the assist by feeding Nunez through the middle.
Adelphi rode that 1-0 advantage lead into the half despite trailing in shots, 8-3, and corners, 4-3. Senior keeper
Sam Whitney made six of her eight saves in the first period.
Junior Caroline Arnold notched the equalizer for Assumption in the 59th minute after collecting the scramble off a corner just outside of the 18-yard box, striking into the top right corner. Not four minutes later, Kelsey Imondi put a high shot above the hands of Whitney for the 2-1 Greyhound lead.
After forcing the ball back on the offensive end, the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick with a foul in the box.
Donna Liotine finished her penalty shot attempt and tied the game again, this time at 2-2.
Regulation ended at that 2-2 score as both teams were unable to finish multiple chances. In the first overtime, the Brown and Gold held a 5-1 lead in shots that forced Edgin to make two saves.
In the opening minutes of the second overtime period, Amanda Arnold benefitted from a loose ball outside of the box that forced Whitney out of her net. Arnold struck immediately with top right corner shot that gave the Greyhounds the victory.
Adelphi finished with a slim 19-18 advantage in shots while Whitney made eight saves and Edgin stopped seven shots. The Greyhounds were also credited with a team save when Nunez almost connected on a header in the 88th minute. Additionally, Paige Radomski generated 11 shots, eight coming on goal, for Assumption.
Adelphi is back on the road to face conference rival Franklin Pierce this Saturday in Rindge, NH. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
