Volleyball Falls Twice on Last Day of Grand Rapids Classic

The Panthers pushed Truman State to the limit in their final game of the weekend.

Allendale, Mich. - On day two of the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic, in Allendale, Michigan, the Panthers fell victim to the Saint Leo University Lions 3-1 and the Truman State Bulldogs 3-2, in a thrilling five set match. With the losses today, the Panthers overall record becomes 0-4.

Adelphi vs. St. Leo

Outside hitter Haley Blunt paced the offense with 14 kills, three assists and three digs. Middle blocker Shelby Stoner contributed 10 kills and two service aces, while Kaitlyn DeStefano chipped in eight kills of her own. Freshmen Sierra Crook and Caleigh Dolese ran the defense with 10 and six digs, respectively.

After dropping the first set 25-18 to the Saint Leo Lions, the Panthers pounced on the opportunity to redeem themselves. They took the second game 25-21, as a result of minimizing attack errors and solid defense. In game three the Lions scampered to a 4-1 lead, but Adelphi clawed their way back into the game, putting themselves within two, making it 9-11. Service errors quickly handed Saint Leo the victory, 25-18.

The fourth game played out much like the first; the Panthers going point-for-point until they were within one of the Lions. However, their opponents' offense proved too strong as they took game four and the match with a final of 25-21.

Adelphi vs. #16 Truman State

Blunt controlled the offense in the five game match with her first double-double of the season, notching 19 kills and 17 digs. DeStefano contributed 12 kills of her own and Stoner chipped in 11. Crook amassed 17 digs followed by Alayna Jackson who had 20 assists and 15 digs in the loss.

Truman State came out dominant in the first game, blowing by Adelphi 25-16. The Panthers found the fire to fuel them to a 29-27 win over the Bulldogs in game two. The entire match went point-for-point and ended with back-to-back kills by freshman Amanda Borges.

Games three and four played out much like the first two sets, with scores of 25-17, in favor of Truman State and 25-19 in favor of Adelphi. The Bulldogs took off running in game five, pulling out to a 6-1 lead. AU attempted to fight their way back into it, but fell short due to service and attack errors down the stretch. Truman State closed out the fifth game 15-7 and took the match as a result.

In the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, Truman State University was ranked 16th in the country.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, September 10 for a non-league game against Dowling College at 7 pm in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
