Volleyball Blanks Dowling, 3-0 in 2013 Home Opener

Kaitlyn DeStefano and Haley Blunt led the Panthers with nine kills each.

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to former East Coast Conference rival Dowling College on Tuesday, September 10 in the Center for Recreation and Sports. The Panthers used a 39-25 advantage in kills to pick up a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-23) victory over the Golden Lions. With the victory Adelphi sits at 1-4 overall, while Dowling falls to 2-3.

Kaitlyn DeStefano and Haley Blunt paced the Adelphi offense with nine kills each, while Shelby Stoner added seven. Sierra Crook led the defense with a team-high 14 digs, while Blunt added 11 and Katie Bryson had 27 set assists.

The Panthers jumped on Dowling early, moving out to a 7-3 lead on Shelby Stoner kill and would push the margin to seven late in the game, 23-16 on a Golden Lion attack error. Amanda Borges used one of her four kills to end game one, giving Adelphi a 25-19 victory.  The Brown and Gold made quick work of Dowilng in game two, sprinting out to an insurmountable 20-9 lead, before ending game two 25-13 on a Blunt kill.

The third and final game was a back and forth affair that saw the Golden Lions pick up their first lead of the game, putting Adelphi in a 5-1 hole early. The Panthers continued to trail midway through the game, 14-9, but a Dowling service error kicked off a 5-0 Adelphi run that saw Stoner knot the action at 14. The score would be tied three more times at 15, 17 and 19 before the Panthers used a 6-4 run to close the game out and collect a 25-23 win.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, September 17 when they welcome Molloy College to the Center for Recreation and Sports for a 7:00 pm non-conference meeting.
