Allendale, Mich.- The Adelphi volleyball team opened their 2013 campaign at the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic in Allendale, Michigan on Friday, September 6. The Panthers took on Grand Valley State University on their home court, falling in three straight sets to the Lakers, followed by another loss to the Warriors of Wayne State (Mich.), also in three sets. The day's events drop Adelphi's record to 0-2 overall.
Adelphi vs. Grand Valley StateShelby Stoner led the offense with seven kills, while
Kaitlyn DeStefano had six and
Haley Blunt chipped in five. Stoner posted a team-high .312 attack percentage, notching two blocks in the loss.
Alayna Jackson had 11 assists and one dig, while fellow setter
Katie Bryson contributed four assists and five digs. Freshman libero
Sierra Crook led the defense with 11 digs in her debut performance in a Panther uniform.
Adelphi dropped games one and two to the hosts by scores of 25-14 and 25-16. Once the third set reached a score of 18-7, the Panthers went on a five point run decreasing the deficit to 18-11, on two consecutive kills by DeStefano. The Lakers would then pull away and close out the game and the match with a 25-14 victory.
In the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, Grand Valley State University was amongst teams receiving votes for the top-25.
Adelphi vs. Wayne State Freshman
Mandy Stanislovaitis, in her debut sporting the Brown and Gold, led the team with six kills, two digs and one service ace. Blunt added four kills and six digs in the loss. Crook, in her second game as a Panther paced the defense with 12 digs, while DeStefano tried slowing down the Warriors offense with five block assists.
The Warriors and Panthers went point-for-point in game one until the score reached 5-4 in favor of Wayne State. The next smallest deficit for Adelphi would occur when the score was 9-7, but would quickly be lost from then on. WSU would take game one with a score of 25-16 as well as game two 25-12. The Brown and Gold could not break free from service and attack errors, giving the Warriors their first victory of the season, with a 25-15 game three win.
The Panthers return to action in Allendale, Michigan on the campus of Grand Valley State University, September 7. They are scheduled to take on Saint Leo at 12 p.m. and Truman State at 4 p.m.
