Worcester, Mass.- The Adelphi University field hockey team earned its first win on the road in a non-conference game against Northeast-10 opponent Assumption College 2-1 on Wednesday. The win gives the Panthers an even 1-1 overall record and drops the Greyhounds to 1-2 overall.
Assumption was first to strike after ten minutes of play, putting them on the board 1-0. Sophomore Kiley Colucci, with her first goal of the season, was able to find the back of the cage from 10 yards out.
The Panthers were quick to answer back 14 minutes later with a pair of goals in a span of 2:20, Mary Plotas, with her second goal of the season took the opportunity to tie the game at one, off a rebound. Freshman Lena Pollich notched her first collegiate goal two minutes later to give Adelphi the lead 2-1.
The second half the Greyhounds would outshoot the Panthers by a 12-2 margin, but it wouldn't be enough due to solid defense from sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Serrao. In the victory Serrao had 8 saves, while Assumption goalie Heather Philbrick had nine in the loss.
Plotas had six shots for the Panthers, with three reaching the goalie and one reaching the back of the cage. Penalty corners were 11-8 in favor of Adelphi, with the Hounds holding a 5-2 edge in the last half of the game.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 14 as they host NE-10 opponent Merrimack College in a non-conference contest on Motamed Field at 1 p.m.
