Softball Shuts Out Southern Connecticut State, Advance to NE-10 Championship

The Panthers held the Owls to just four hits in the win.

Amy Caird was 2-3 in the win.
Box Score Manchester, NH - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on Southern Connecticut State in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Championship, hosted by Southern New Hampshire on Friday, May 3. The top seeded Panthers got an eight strike out, four hit performance from Laurin Watts, shutting down the Owls in a 2-0 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 37-17 overall and advance to the Northeast-10 Championship game.

A pitchers dual broke out in Manchester, New Hampshire as Watts, and her counter part Kelsey Cockrill manged to keep the game scoreless through five and a half innings of play. However, back-to-back singles from Kayla Rieger and Emily Dorko in the bottom of the sixth gave Amy Caird two runners on and no outs. Caird bunted home Rieger, breaking the drought and giving Adelphi a one run lead. Victoria Wink followed that up with a single to left, allowing Dorko to cross home plate, pushing the Panthers lead to 2-0.

Watts took it from there, inducing two outs in the top of the seventh, but leaving an Owl on the base paths with the tying run at the plate. But, Watts worked her eighth strike out of the day to shut the door on Southern Connecticut State and give Adelphi a 2-0 win.

Watts gave up just four hits, striking out eight and walking two in her 19th win of the season. Caird led the Panther offense, going 2-3 with an rbi, while Wink was 1-3 with an rbi and Dorko was 1-3 with a run scored. Rieger going the hit parade, going 1-2 with a run scored, while Katie Andrews and Meghan Heiser added one hit each.

Adelphi will face off against the number two from the Southwest Division, New Haven at 1:00 pm in the Northeast-10 Championship game on Saturday, May 4 on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University.
