Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The top seeded Adelphi University men's lacrosse team played host to #3 LeMoyne College on Saturday, May 18 in the NCAA Division II National Semifinal on Motamed Field. The Panthers trailed 13-12 with 5:19 left in the game, but the Dolphins scored three of the last four goals in the contest to secure the win. With the victory, LeMoyne improves to 17-2 overall and advances to the National Championship game, while Adelphi closes out 2013 with a record of 14-3.
Salvatore Tuttle led the Panthers on offense with seven points on five goals and two assists, while
Robert Rossi chipped in two goals and
Brian Prendergast had a goal and an assist.
Eric Janssen was credited with just his third loss of the season, making five saves.
Adelphi opened the game on fire, scoring the first three goals of the contest and dominated the first seven minutes of the first quarter. Jaime McAndrew got Adelphi on the board and then Tuttle put in two of his own. The Dolphins woke up at the 6:18 mark and responded with three straight of their own to knot the score at three all with 4:35 on the clock.
However, the Panthers pulled momentum back with the final two goals of the quarter, including a tally from
Joe Celano as time expired, giving the Brown and Gold a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes of action. The frame was all Dolphins, as LeMoyne scored four straight, pushing out to a 7-5 lead with 3:07 left in the half. The Panthers got another tally from McAndrew with 1:45 left to make it a one goal game at intermission.
Adelphi and LeMoyne exchanged goals to open up the third quarter of action, but then the Dolphins scored back-to-back goals, including a man down goal from Kevin Kelly. The Brown and Gold would answer with two scores from Tuttle, but the Dolphins came right back with another goal from Kelly and a score from Andrew Chadderdon.
LeMoyne held a 12-9 edge to open the fourth and final quarter, but the Panthers would score three of the first four goals, clawing their way back within one on a Rossi goal with 5:19 left in the game. But, that was as close as Adelphi would get, as the Dolphins responded with three straight in a span of just 1:51 to put the game away, 16-12. However, the Panthers kept battling and closed out the game on another Tuttle tally, falling 16-13.
Adelphi ends the successful 2013 season with an overall record of 14-3 and a share of the Northeast-10 Regular Season Championship.
