Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team opened up East Super Regional action on Friday, May 17 against #3 Molloy College on Janet L. Ficke Field. The fifth ranked Panthers were held scoreless by the Lions pitching staff, falling 7-0 in game one of the best of three Super Regional series. Molloy improved to 51-12 with the win, while Adelphi falls to 41-18.
The Lions got on the board first, using a sacrifice fly and a two run single up the middle to jump out to a 3-0 lead just six outs into the contest. After three straight strikeouts from Adelphi in the top of the second, Molloy doubled their run total in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two run double and a single thru the right side and led 6-0 just two innings into play.
At that points the Panthers made a pitching change, with
Laurin Watts taking over for
Devon Kelly, who tossed two innings, gave up three earned runs and struck out six. Watts had an immediate impact, holding Molloy scoreless in the bottom of the third. She went on to throw four innings, giving up just four hits, one run and striking out two.
However, it was not enough as the Panthers managed just two hits in the game and worked three walks, falling 7-0.
Amy Caird and
Heather Salerno managed to pick up both of Adelphi's hits, while Molloy's Megan Butterworth went seven innings, striking out 13 to pick up the her 27th win of the season.
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, May 18 at 1:00 pm in game two of the best of three series with Molloy on Janet L. Ficke Field.
