Brookville, N.Y. – The Adelphi women's softball team won their second game of the NCAA Regional Tournament earlier today against host LIU-Post. The Panthers (40-17) posted five runs between the first two innings and held on to secure their spot in the NCAA Regional final by way of a 5-2 victory.
Devon Kelly went the distance on the mound for the Panthers after tossing the full six innings and allowing just two runs on five hits while fanning three and walking just one. As a team, the Panthers registered six hits and received help from the Pioneer pitching staff with seven walks.
A leadoff single by
Emily Dorko in the bottom of the first was followed up by an
Amy Caird walk to put runners on first and second with none out.
Katie Andrews' single juiced the bases with one out to bring up Megan Heiser. A walk drove in Dorko to put the Panthers up 1-0 with the bases still loaded. Another walk from
Jeanine Leo drove it the second run of the inning and was followed up with a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Linder to drive in Andrews. When all was said and done in the first, the Brown and Gold held a 3-0 lead.
Adelphi posted two more runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of RBI's from Caird and
Katie Andrews who drove in
Kayla Rieger and Dorko respectively.
Kelly retired the first three batters in the third, fourth and fifth innings while Adelphi mustered up a combined three walks and one hit over those innings.
Heading into the top of the fifth, Alexis Gonzalez drove in Liz Weber to make it a 5-1 affair. With two outs, the Pioneers' managed to get one more run as Gonzalez scored on an Andrews fielding error to make it 5-2. Kelly got Maria Palmeri to ground out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, it was last licks for LIU-Post. Dana Moss led off the inning with a single. However, the next two batters both reached on a fielder's choice to make it two outs with a runner on first. Catherine Havens grounded out to Andrews to end the game.
The Panthers will now advance to the NCAA Regional Championship game tomorrow at 1pm.
