Box Score Brookville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Brookville, New York on Friday, May 10 to open up NCAA East Regional play on the campus of LIU-Post against fourth seeded New Haven. The story of the game for the Panthers was pitching, as
Laurin Watts and
Devon Kelly combined to give up just three hits and one run in a 4-1 Brown and Gold Victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 39-17 overall and advances to face the top seeded hosts with a spot in the Regional Final on the line.
Watts opened the game on the bump for Adelphi and tossed three innings, giving up just one run, three hits and striking out two. If possible, Kelly was even sharper, going four innings and allowing no runs, no hits, striking out two and walking three in relief. Courtesy of her strong start, Watts was credited with her 21st win of the season, which gives her sole possesion of third on Adelphi's single season list.
The run support came in the first two innings of play. Adelphi's first run came in the top of the first when a throwing error by New Haven's short stop allowed
Meghan Heiser to reach first and moved the Panthers runners around the base paths, including pushing
Amy Caird across home plate, 1-0.
The Brown and Gold would add the other three runs in the top of the second. Caird smoked a one out single through the left side and scored
Kayla Rieger, while advancing
Emily Dorko to second. A batter later
Victoria Wink roped a single down the line in left field, giving Dork enough time to dart across home plate and push the Panthers edge to three runs. Fittingly, Heiser was involved in Adelphi's first run and last run of the game. She grounded out to second base, but it was deep enough to allow Caird to scamper home and give Adelphi a 4-0 margin after an inning and a half of play.
New Haven managed their only run of the game in the bottom of the second, opening the inning with a double to left from Brooke Fisher, which turned into a run, thanks to a Brandy Dianno single to left, 4-1. However, Watts induced a fly out from Keri Tricinelli and struck out Lindsey Couturier to end the threat and inning.
Caird led the Panther offense, going 2-4 with two runs, scored while Dorko was 1-3 with a run scored and Rieger was responsible for Adelphi's fourth run, going 1-2. In addition, Wink was 1-4 with an rbi, while
Jeanine Leo was also 1-4.
The Panthers return to action at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 11 in Brookville, New York against #1 LIU Post. The winner of Saturday's match-up will earn a spot in the NCAA East Regional Championship.
