Worcester, MA - On Sunday afternoon, the 13th ranked Adelphi University softball team completed a three-game sweep of Northeast-10 Conference and divisional foe Assumption College, coming away with a 10-6 victory at Marois Field. With the win Adelphi improves to 28-9 overall and remain atop the Southwest Division at 10-2.
Adelphi got on the board first as Emily Dorko reached on a leadoff single and eventually scored on an error for the early 1-0 lead. The Hounds got the run right back though on a solo homer to dead center by Ashley Impagliazzo in the bottom of the inning.
The game remained tied until the top of the fourth when the Panthers struck for seven runs, chasing Assumption starterRachel Hedge. Adelphi had seven hits in the inning, including a two-run homer to left center from Elizabeth Lindner and a two-run single to center from Meghan Heiser, who also had an rbi single to left center. Courtney Sullivan also drove in a run, while another run came across on an Assumption passed ball.
Assumption got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle from sophomore Jess DiPilato, along with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth by Melissa Jalbert as she scored on an overthrow back to the pitcher.
The game headed to the sixth at 8-3 in favor of Adelphi before a two-RBI single thru the left side by Heiser stretched the lead out to 10-3. Assumption completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with the third home run of the season by DiPilato, along with an RBI hit by Nikki Boris and an unearned run from Lauren Medeiros.
Laurin Watts started for Adelphi, going three innings before giving way to Devon Kelly, who went the remaining four innings to improve to 13-4 on the season. Watts struck out three, walked two and gave up just three hits, while Kelly struck out three, walked three and gave up just one earned run.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 when they travel to West Haven, Connecticut for a 3:00 pm meeting with divisional opponent New Haven.
