Box Score 2 New Haven, CT - The 13th ranked Adelphi University softball team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut on Wednesday, April 10 to take on Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State in a doubleheader. The Panthers dropped both games by the scores of 2-1 and 3-2, falling to 25-9 overall and 7-2 in division, while the Owls improve to 18-14 and 5-2 in the Southwest.
Game One
The Owls broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with a two run home run over the wall in left, but that was all the would get as
Devon Kelly shut the door and held Southern Connecticut scoreless for the rest of the game. In all, Kelly would pitch six innings, give up four hits, two unearned runs, struck out four and walked two.
After five scoreless innings the Panthers would break through in the top of the sixth, putting
Amy Caird and
Emily Dorko on second and third with two outs and
Victoria Wink stepping to the plate. Wink would single to second base, scoring Caird and pulling Adelphi within one run, but the very next batter would ground out to first, ending the threat and securing a 2-1 win for Southern Connecticut.
The Brown and Gold had three hits in the loss, notched by Wink, Caird and
Katie Andrews.
Game Two
Adelphi managed to get on the board first in the second game, scoring a run in the top of the fourth when
Elizabeth Lindner hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Andrews, 1-0. However, the Owls would respond in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on four hits, but left two on base.
Lindner would strike another blow for Adelphi in the top of the sixth, smoking a home run over the wall in left to knot the score at two all. With Southern Connecticut State up in the bottom of the seventh the game seemed destined for extra innings until two out single to left field brought the winning run across home and sunk the Panthers, 3-2.
Laurin Watts threw 6.2 strong innings, walking three, and giving up nine hits in the loss. The Panthers registered eight hits, getting two from
Heather Salerno and Andrews, while Wink,
Jaclyn Binstock, Lindner and
Kayla Rieger accounted for the other four.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for a three game set with Assumption.
