Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Florida - The Adelphi University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, March 9 in Kissimmee, Florida, improving to 7-2 overall. The Brown and Gold out slugged Southwest Minnesota State to the tune of 12-6 and followed that up by rolling past Ashland, 9-1 in five innings.
Adelphi vs. SMSU
The Panthers bats came alive early, as Adelphi hung five runs on the the Mustangs in the bottom of the first.
Emily Dorko was the first to come around and score, taking advantage of a
Meghan Heiser single. A SMSU error brought home
Victoria Wink making the score 2-0 and then a
Jeanine Leo bomb that sailed over the center field wall, scored three, 5-0.
However, the Mustangs kept fighting and pulled to within one run after the third, scoring four runs, including two on home runs of their own, 5-4. Adelphi responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a
Kayla Rieger single and a Wink double brought in two runs to give the Panthers some breathing room at 8-4.
A
Jordan Catalano single brought around
Katie Andrews in the top of the fifth, to make it 9-4 and it would be a 9-6 game as Adelphi came up in the bottom of the sixth.
Jaclyn Binstock, Andrews and Leo would combine to help Adelphi double up SMSU, 12-6 on a walk, a sacrifice fly and a double the line, 12-6. The Mustangs could muster just one hit in the top of the seventh, giving Adelphi the win.
Adelphi has five players register two hits in the win, led by Leo, who was 2-3 with three RBI and two runs, while Rieger was 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Devon Kelly was credited with the win after tossing five innings of relief, striking out two and giving up just six hits all while improving to 3-1.
Adelphi vs. Ashland
The Panthers did all of their damage in one innings against the Eagles. Ashland would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Adelphi would unleash a 10 hit, nine run barrage in the top of the third to turn a one run hole, into an eight run bulge.
Elizabeth Lindner kicked things off with a double to right center and was driven home by a Dorko single that gave Adelphi runners on second and third. Singles from
Heather Salerno and Wink would give Adelphi a 3-1 lead with no outs and Wink would later score on a passed ball to push the margin to 4-1.
An Andrews single would bring home
Laurin Watts, who was helping her own cause as The Panthers lead became 5-1. A Leo double to center netted Adelphi sixth run and then another Lindner smack put two more numbers on the board to give the Brown and Gold an 8-1 lead and force Ashland to change pitchers. Another Rieger hit brought around Lindner and ended the Panther scoring binge at 9-1.
It would be all zeros from there as a pitchers duel broke out and Watts got the best of the battle, picking up her third win of the year after throwing five innings, giving up one run and striking out five. Lindner and Rieger were both 2-2, while Lindner had two two RBI and two runs, Rieger countered with one of each. Dorko was the only other Panthers to post two hits, going 2-3 with one RBI and one run.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, March 10 with games against Wayne State and Minnesota State Mankato.
