Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Florida - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Kissimmee, Florida on Friday, March 8 to open up their Southern Swing again Notre Dame College (OH) and regional foe Holy Family University. The Panthers topped Notre Dame, 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off home run from
Victoria Wink and then followed that up with a loss in the seventh inning to Holy Family, 5-4. WIth the split Adelphi is now 5-2 on the season.
Adelphi vs. Notre Dame (OH)
After three scoreless innings, the Falcons struck first, getting three runs in the top of the fourth on a single to right field and then back-to-back walks before a a strike out ended the threat and the inning. From there the game lulled back into a pitchers dual until the bottom of the seventh.
Elizabeth Lindner led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single to center and then a
Kayla Rieger bunt single put runners on first and second. That was followed by an
Emily Dorko bunt that would have loaded the bases, but a Notre Dame miscue allowed Lindner to cross home plate. A
Heather Salerno sacrifice fly brought in Rieger and put Wink at the plate with Dorko standing on second. Wink then roped a ball that sailed over the wall in left center, scoring two runs and giving Adelphi a 4-3 walk-off victory.
Dorko and Lindner led all players with three hits each as Dorko was 3-4 with a run scored and Lindner was 3-3 with a run. Wink, Salerno,
Jaclyn Binstock,
Katie Andrews,
Jeanine Leo and Rieger each registered a hit, while Wink had two RBI and Salerno drove in one run.
Laurin Watts went the distance, throwing seven innings allowing five hits and striking out nine to collect her third victory of the season.
Adelphi vs. Holy Family
The Panthers jumped on Holy Family early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on an Andrews double to left center that brought around
Meghan Heiser and Wink to give Adelphi a quick 2-0 cushion. The Tigers got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but a Leo shot to center in the top of the third scored
Courtney Sullivan to push the bulge back to two runs, 3-1.
Adelphi and Holy Family would trade runs again, with the Panthers coming in the top of the fifth on a Leo double to center that allowed Andrews to cross home plate, which made the count 4-2 Adelphi with three outs to play. The Tigers took advantage of a Panther miscue right away and placed a runner on first and a walk gave Holy Family runners on first and second. From there a bunt made the score 4-3 and a few batters later Holy Family had two outs and two runners on when two Panther errors on the same play gaver the Tigers the opportunity to score two runners and steal a win from Adelphi, 5-4.
Both Andrews and Dorko were 4-4 in the loss, while Andrews added two RBI and a run scored. In addition, Wink, Heiser and Leo were each 2-4 with Wink and Heiser scoring one run each and Leo driving in two.
Devon Kelly tossed seven innings for the Panthers, striking out three, walking two and giving up just two earned runs.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 9 when they take on Southern Minnesota State University and Ashland in Kissimmee, Florida.
