Bowling Places Sixth at NEC Event #3

Panthers earn bid to NEC Championship

The Panthers qualified for the Northeast Conference Championship and will bowl in the opening round on March 23.
Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Adelphi University bowling team finished in sixth place in the Northeast Conference after competing in NEC Event #3 this weekend. The Panthers posted a 13-14 conference record and will advance to the NEC Championships to face St. Francis University in the opening round on Saturday, March 23.

Adelphi completed a 4-5 weekend at the last of three NEC tournaments. The final event opened with the Panthers facing NEC regular season champion Fairleigh Dickinson. Samantha Morlack (258), Holly Zink (223) and Erica Schneider (213) turned in fine performances  but the squad fell by 30 pins, 1072-1042. The Panthers then faced the Terriers of St. Francis College. Schneider (267), Zink (245) and Morlack (215) opened an early lead and extended it to a 107 pin victory, 1076-969. The Pioneers of Sacred Heart University took away a 75 pin win despite another fine effort by Schneider (232). Senior Kristina Porter stepped in to contribute a 232 effort but the Panthers fell by 87 pins, 1015-928, to the Red Flash of St. Francis University. The final match of day one saw the Panthers face the Hawks of Monmouth University. The match was close throughout. The two squad were tied at 810-810 at the end of the ninth frame. The match came to a dramatic conclusion as the Monmouth anchor failed to strike on her last ball and the match went into a roll off at 933-933. The Panthers fell in the roll off 118-107.

Day two saw the Panthers facing the Black Birds of LIU who had beaten Adelphi in the last three contests.  Morlack completed the match with eight straight strikes to lift the squad to a 87 pin win, 1007-920. Kathryn Rivera (214), Michele Fitzpatrick (210) and Schneider (204) helped the ladies past the Pea Hens of St. Peter's University by 164 pins, 990-826. The Panthers then continued to roll as they opened an early lead against the Golden Bears of Kutztown University as Fitzpatrick (227), Morlack (219) and Zink (200) rolled a 22 pin victory, 1027-1005. The last match of the day came against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. Zink (210) remained steady but Adelphi failed to capitalize on some big strikes as four of the five Panthers opened in the ninth frame and, despite four straight strikes by Morlack, were unable to escape a 26 pin loss, 957-931. The Panthers are now 65-32 on the season and return to the boards at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn., on March 15.
