Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to Bentley University on Saturday, March 23 on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers out hit the Falcons in game one 12-2, securing a 7-0 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 12-6 overall and 5-0 in Northeast-10 contests, while Bentley falls 4-7 and 0-1 in the conference.
Game One
Emily Dorko led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right center and was brought home a batter later when
Heather Salerno grounded out, allowing Dorko to scamper home. Adelphi tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third, the first coming on a
Jaclyn Binstock single that scored
Victoria Wink. The Brown and Gold's third and fourth runs of the game were driven in by
Jeanine Leo, who doubled to left center, scoring
Meghan Heiser and Binstock, 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Heiser did the damage with her bat, roping a single thru short that scored Dorko and
Amy Caird, pushing Adelphi out front by six runs. Salerno would score the Panthers final run in the bottom of the sixth on a Bentley error, 7-0.
That was more than enough run support for starter
Devon Kelly, who went the distance, allowing just two hits and no runs, striking out 11 of the 28 batters she faced to pick up her fourth win of the season. Dorko and Leo led the way at the plate for Adelphi, posting three hits each, Dorko had two runs scored, while Leo drove in two. The only other Panther to collect more than one hit was Wink, who was 2-3 with a run scored.
Game Two
Adelphi remained hot at the plate, scoring a run in both the bottom of the first and the bottom of the third to take an early, 2-0 lead. Dorko kicked off the action for the Panthers with a hit in the second straight game, this time taking advantage of a Bentley miscue, on a well hit ball by Wink, to slip home. The second Brown and Gold run was driven in by Wink, who did the damage on her own this time with a drive to left center that plated Salerno, 2-0.
The bulk of the Adelphi runs came in the sixth, as the Panthers scored four runs on five hits. Binstock and Andrews got the hit parade started with back-to-back singles and then Leo scored Binstock with a double down the left field line.
Elizabeth Lindner smacked a single to right that scored both Andrews and Leo and would later cross home on a RBI bunt from Dorko, making the score 6-0 in Adelphi's favor.
The Panther pitching staff turned in another stellar performance, this time by
Laurin Watts, who tossed a complete game one hitter, striking out eight and walking just two to record her ninth victory of the season. Dorko, Wink and Lindner each notched two hits, and accounted for four of Adelphi's rbi, with Leo picking up the other one.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, March 24 when they play host to Stonehill College at noon on Janet L. Ficke Field.
