Manchester, NH – The #4 men's lacrosse team took on the Hawks of St. Anselm earlier this afternoon in their first road contest. Each team matched one another in three of the four quarters, but it was Adelphi's push in the final three minutes that allowed them to come away with the win in a tightly contested 9-8 affair. In victory, Adelphi's record remains unblemished at 3-0, 1-0 NE-10 while St. Anselm continues to search for their first win, 0-3, 0-1.
The duo of
Joe Celano and
Ikerson Hopper, the NE-10 Player of the Week, combined for six of Adelphi's nine goals as they each found the back of the cage three times.
Salvatore Tuttle dished out three assists and collected one goal while
Jamie McAndrew had an even split of two points.
Gregory Puskuldjian notched one goal, was an impressive 10-11 on face offs and scooped up a game high eight ground balls while his counterpart,
Rashad Cureton was equally as efficient, winning seven of nine and picking up six ground balls.
Eric Janssen and
Aidan Bennardo had identical stats, evenly splitting 60 minutes and recording five saves apiece. Bennardo came home with the win; his first of the season.
Ryan Mee and Jake Mallinson each had four points with Mee's coming on three goals and one assist while Mallinson scored and dished out two. Geoff Kennedy, Andrew Messner and Griffin Sandler rounded out the scoring contingent with one goal apiece. Jonathon O'Reilly suffered the loss on the day as the goalkeeper made 20 saves.
The Panthers outshot St. Anselm, 45-32, picked up more groundballs, 38-28, and won 17-20 faceoffs.
Hopper and Celano bookended the first period with goals but were matched by the efforts of Mee and Messner's back to back scores within two minutes of each other. Knotted at 2-2 at the end of the first, Adelphi took a one goal lead heading into halftime as Hopperson, Celano, McAndrew and Tuttle all found the back of the net while St. Anselm's Mallinson scored twice.
Tuttle and Mee traded goals in the third to set the stage for a nail biting fourth quarter. Celano gave the Panthers a two goal cushion at 7-5, but St. Anselm responded with three straight scores to turn the tables and go up 8-7. The third came with under three minutes left to play, forcing the Panther's into a tight spot with time running out.
Puskuldjian notched his first goal of the season just six seconds after the faceoff to even the slate at 8-8. In dramatic fashion, McAndrew found Hopper for the game winning goal with 1:56 left to play as the Brown and Gold held off the hosts for the remainder of the game.
The Stickmen are back in action on Saturday, March 23 when they head back up to New Hampshire for an 11am NE-10 contest against Franklin Pierce.
