Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Florida - The Adelphi University softball team reached the halfway mark of their southern swing on Sunday, March 10 with contest against Wayne State University (MI) and Minnesota State Mankato. The Panthers were handed two losses on the day, dropping a 6-2 decision to Wayne State and a 11-0 game to Minnesota State Mankato. The losses drop Adelphi to 7-4 overall on the year.
Adelphi vs. Wayne State
Two and a half innings passed in a scoreless parade of batters until Wayne State five runs on the board in the bottom of the third on five hits, including three on a double to center that cleared the bases. The Warriors would add another run in the bottom of the fifth on another double to push their advantage to 6-0.
The Panthers showed signs of life in the sixth as
Kayla Rieger opened the inning with a single to short and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Emily Dorko and took third on a
Heather Salerno ground out. Rieger would cross home plate, courtesy of a
Victoria Wink double down the left field line, but that was all Adelphi would get in the inning, 6-1.
After holding Wayne State scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Brown and Gold mustered just one run in the top of the seventh, as
Jaclyn Binstock scored on an
Elizabeth Lindner ground out, which made the final count, 6-2.
Binstock led the way at the plate, going 2-3 with a run scored, while Wink,
Katie Andrews, Rieger and
Jeanine Leo combined for Adelphi's other four hits.
Devon Kelly was credited with her second loss of the season after throwing 5.1 innings, striking out two, while
Katie Andrews threw 0.2 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout.
Adelphi vs. Minnesota State-Mankato
The Mavericks jumped on Adelphi early, getting three runs in the top of the first, two on a double to right center and then adding six more in the top of the second, courtesy of two three run jacks to take a 9-0 lead after 12 outs. Adelphi was unable to get a run on the board in the contest, despite leading runners on base in four of five innings, while the Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth to close out the 11-0 victory.
Laurin Watts was credited with the loss, falling to 3-2, after tossing 1.2 innings striking out two and walking five, while
Katie Andrews come on in relief, throwing 3.1 innings and struck out one and walked five.
Heather Salerno,
Jaclyn Binstock,
Katie Andrews and
Amy Caird accounted for all four Panther hits.
Adelphi will return to Tuesday, March 12 when they take on the University of Southern Indiana and Lees-McRae College at 11 am and 1pm.
