Bradley Beach, N.J. - The Adelphi University women's bowling team went 4-5 over two days of action at Northeast Conference Event #2, taking on seven nationally-ranked opponents in the process.
Day one action saw the Panthers face the Peacocks of St. Peter's University. Adelphi led early but SPU fired a 196 pin effort in game four to open a lead and did not look back, taking the match by five pins, 868-863. The Panthers then played the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. Adelphi held the lead going into game five but the Gothic Knights rallied, firing a 175 in game five. The Panthers held on, however, and won by a single pin, 941-940.
The Terriers of St. Francis College were next up for the Panthers. Adelphi fired 248 and 209 games en route to a 167 pin win, 975-808. Next, the Hawks of Monmouth University where unable to match a consistent Panther effort and fell by 74 pins, 888-814. The Pioneers of Sacred Heart University started well with a 212 effort and the Panthers fell back by 63 pins early. Unable to create any momentum, Adelphi fell by 78 pins, 955-880.
Day two began with promise as the Panthers were able to lead throughout a tough match versus Kutztown University. The squad capitalized on a 211 pin game four to seal the victory by 14 pins, 891-877. The Black Birds of LIU Brooklyn fell back early in the match but fired a 215 pin effort in game five to take a 38 pin win, 939-901, despite a 202 pin showing in game five by the Panthers.
NEC front runner Fairleigh Dickinson was able to take advantage to poor Panther spare shooting to take a two pin victory, 885-883, on the way to place first in the tournament. Adelphi led the match by 49 pins after game three but 147 and 165 pin showings left the squad coming up short. In the final match of the day, the Red Flash of St. Francis University led throughout the duel and took an 80 pin victory, 901-831, ending the Panthers day 1-3.
The Panthers are now 47-22 overall and 9-9 in NEC play, standing in sixth place in the league. Adelphi returns to action on Friday at the three day Delaware State Capital Classic.
