Carly Aceves and
Molly Cuevas, the Adelphi University field hockey team came away with a 2-1 win against the Greyhounds of Assumption College on Tuesday evening at Motamed Field. With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds fall to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
Aceves got the Panthers on the board early, as she took a pass from Cuevas and fired her fourth goal of the season past Heather Philbrick just 51 seconds into the game. Just over two minutes later, Cuevas tapped in a rebound for an unassisted goal and gave Adelphi a 2-0 lead just three minutes into play.
That proved to be the only offense of the opening frame as the Panthers' defense limited the Greyhounds to just three total shots in the half.
With 15 minutes left in the game, Kiley Colucci got the Greyhounds on the board with her sixth goal of the season. Serrao aggressively charged out of the goal and Colucci maneuvered past her and tapped the ball into the back of the net to trim the Panthers' lead to 2-1.
However, the Panthers' defense remained strong down the stretch of regulation as they did not allow the Greyhounds to score the equalizer.
Adelphi held an 8-6 lead in total shots and also led 4-3 in penalty corners. Serrao made three saves in the win, while her counterpart Philbrick made four in the loss.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"This was a good win for us, especially since it's one of our last conference games of the season," commented Head Coach
Gloria O'Connor. "The team has to come out aggressive on Saturday against Bentley to ensure a spot in playoffs."
