Volleyball Handles Pace and Chestnut Hill in Straight Sets

The Panthers picked up a 3-0 win over the Setters and the Griffins of Chesnut Hill College.

Garden, City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Pace University and Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, October 12 in tri-match format. The Panthers picked up their second conference win, defeating Pace in three straight sets (25-21, 29-27, 25-23). The Black and Gold also picked up a non-conference win against the Griffins, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 26-24).

With both wins, the Brown and Gold improves to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10.

Game 1

Haley Blunt led the offense with 10 kills, while Kaitlyn DeStefano, Amanda Borges and Colleen Raga each chipped in seven kills of their own. Katie Bryson had 32 assists in the victory and Sierra Crook topped the defense with 10 digs.

After a back-and forth first set, the Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game. The Setters quickly responded, going on a five point run of their own. The Blue and Gold held its largest lead at 22-17, but not before Adelphi would even the score at 22-22, with kills from Raga and Stoner. After eight instances of a tie score, the Panthers would go on to win the second set 29-27.

The final game was much like the first two, going back-and-forth, but attack errors would overcome the Setters in the final points. A Stoner kill would end the game and give Adelphi its second conference victory with a score of 25-23.

Game 2

Hitting an impressive .448, DeStefano registered 15 kills in the 3-0 sweep of Chestnut Hill College. Stoner contributed eight kills to the victory while Bryson reached 38 assists in three games. Crook grabbed 14 digs, as Blunt and Mandy Stanislovaitis each registered 10 of their own.

Three competitive sets, the Panthers reached midway (15-11) in the first game before pulling away to win 25-20. The next set nearly mimicked the first ending 25-20, but not before a close 26-24 third-set victory to take the match.

Coach's Thoughts on the Games
"It was really great to pick up two wins today, especially since one of them was a conference contest," stated Head Coach Danielle MacKnight. "We were able to work on some things that will be necessary in the next couple of weeks during the bulk of NE-10 play."

Up Next
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, October 17, as they travel to the University of Bridgeport for a non-conference contest at 7 p.m, before taking on the remainder of NE-10 opponents.
