Worcester, Mass. – The Adelphi University field hockey team dropped its Northeast-10 Conference opener at Assumption College by a score of 3-2 at the Multi-Sports Stadium on Saturday. The Panthers fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in NE-10 play, while the Greyhounds snap a 12-game losing streak and improve to 1-4 and 1-0 in league play.
Assumption's Kiley Colucci snuck in the game-winning goal with three and a half minutes left in regulation, snapping a 2-2 tie and giving the Greyhounds their first win since beating Saint Michael's College on Sep. 17, 2011.
The hosts struck first on a Maria Beatrice goal at the 21:32 mark, as she knocked in her own rebound after a yellow card on Adelphi's
Erin Grekin that gave Assumption a one-player advantage.
The Panthers defense helped limit the first half damage and complimented goalie
Kristine Puzio's seven first half saves. Jamie DeGrote and
Briana Rubenstein each made defensive saves to deflect the Greyhound assault, which registered 12 shots in the opening period.
Assumption maintained full control of the tempo of the contest into the second half, but the Adelphi defense held strong. Freshman
Kelly Serrao took over in the cage and got a helping stick from senior
Emilee Rahner who blocked a would-be goal at the 29:39 mark.
Rahner knotted the game at 1-all 12 minutes into the second half, blasting the ball past Assumption keeper Lauren Neilan on an assist by classmate
Cassie Cabral. Seven minutes later, freshman
Molly Cuevas gave the Panthers their first lead of the game by threading the Greyhound defensive and plunking a backhanded flip into the lower left side of the goal.
Shortly after, Rahner made a diving stop on an Assumption breakaway, which awarded the hosts a penalty stroke. Kylie Zurn lined up for the shot, but Serrao made an agile lunging save to her stick side to preserve the 2-1 lead.
The lead would not last, however, as Sarah Frahm pushed a pass to her right to Paige Anderson, who faked a shot and rifled it back to Frahm atop the circle. Frahm seized the open lane to the cage and fired it in to make it a 2-2 tie with 8:41 to play.
Assumption aimed to crack the deadlock at the 3:50 mark, but a tenacious hustle by DeGrote broke up a one-on-one breakaway and gave the Panther defense time to reset. Despite the second chance for Adelphi, the Greyhounds snagged the game-winning goal via Colucci's carefully place shot in front of a crowded crease that gave the hosts the 3-2 victory.
Neilan stopped four shots in the victory, while Puzio and Serrao made seven and 11 saves for the Panthers, respectively.
The Panthers look to snap a four-game losing streak and pick up the first win of 2012 when they take on Saint Michael's College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
