Garden City, N.Y. - Earlier tonight, the Adelphi University volleyball team hosted the Bears of nearby New York Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest. The Panthers survived a stern challenge from their opponents and delivered a hard fought 3-2 win, (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9). Win the win, the Panthers improve their overall record to 8-7 while the Bears move to 8-2.
Kaitlyn DeStefano led the Panthers' offense with 16 kills and a .346 hitting percentage while teammate
Samantha Rico chipped in 13 kills and led the team with a stellar .600 hitting percentage.
Chelsea Overholt was the third Panther in double digits kills with 12. Meanwhile, setter
Katie Bryson had a game-high 32 assists and
Alayna Jackson added 13.
Bianca Hernandez led the defensive effort with 21 digs while Overholt chipped in 11.
The Panthers found themselves down early in game one 12-8 but a Destefano kill began a run for the home team. The 15-7 streak, punctuated by a successful attack by Overholt gave Adelphi the final point in the set, 25-19.
Either team could take a lead greater than two points in a back and forth second game until the Bears put themselves in front 16-11. However, Adelphi responded with an 8-1 run of their own to take a 19-17 lead. From there, both teams battled back and forth, but it was the Bears that reached the 25 point plateau first, edging out the Brown and Gold by two.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in game three, but NYIT battled back, stringing together a 15-10 run to even the playing field at 18. Back to back kills by Overholt and Destefano sparked Adelphi's resurgence and the Panthers came away with a 25-20 win in game three.
The visitors jumped out to a 10-5 lead in game four and continued to lead for the majority of the set. The Panthers would close a 20-15 gap to 22-19 but would get no closer and fell 25-21.
In the deciding game, Head Coach
Danielle MacKnight's crew put up three points before the Bears could get on the board. The evenly matched teams continued to battle as they had all night in a see-saw affair until the 9-8 mark when NYIT held the lead. However, it was short lived as the Bears made a few costly errors and essentially open up the flood gates, allowing an impressive 6-0 Panther run ended by senior
Emily Dorko.
