Field Hockey Clipped at AIC, 3-2

Panthers suffer fifth one-goal defeat of season

Freshman Molly Cuevas tallied a goal in Adelphi's 3-2 loss at American International on Tuesday.
Box Score Springfield, Mass. - The Adelphi University field hockey team surrendered the go-ahead goal with under eight minutes left in regulation to drop a 3-2 decision at American International College on Tuesday. The Panthers' fifth loss by a score of 3-2 in the last six games brings them to 0-8 overall, while the Yellow Jackets pick up the first win of the season and climb to 1-6.

For the hosts, Lisa Duckles drove in her second goal of the game with a blast off a penalty corner to give AIC a 3-2 lead with 7:14 left to play. The goal would stand up as a trio of last minute penalty corners for Adelphi went unconverted and the Yellow Jackets marched on to their first victory of 2012.

A pair of first half goals, the first by Jenna Masionis and the second by Duckles, put AIC up 2-0 early, but freshman Molly Cuevas redirected a shot from senior Emilee Rahner with a mere four seconds left in the period to halve the deficit going into halftime. Senior Erin Grekin brought the Panthers within one when she chipped in a goal in the 55th minute off a scramble in front of the cage, but Duckles had the last say and pushed her team in front several minutes later.

In goal, Kori Huffman registered her first win of the season and made three saves in the contest. Adelphi keeper Kristine Puzio made seven saves in the losing effort.

The Yellow Jackets doubled up the Panthers in shots on goal with a 10-5 advantage, while Adelphi held a slim 11-9 lead in penalty corners.

The Panthers are slated for their Northeast-10 Conference home opener on Saturday when they host Bentley University at 2 p.m.
