Women's Soccer Topples #23 UMass Lowell, 4-0

The Panthers hold a 4-0 record in the all-time series record with the Riverhawks

Garden City, N.Y. - Earlier this afternoon, the Adelphi women's soccer team hosted the #23 ranked Riverhawks of the UMass Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. It was a closely contested game early, but Emily Masiello's first goal of the season in the 35th minute of the opening half proved to be the difference. The Brown and Gold then went on to tack on three more insurance goals in the second to seal the deal, 4-0. The Panthers improve to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Riverhawks drop to 1-3-1 and 0-3 in conference play.
 
The Panthers, who played to a 0-0 draw in double overtime the last time out, were forced to defend early, as five of six shots by the Riverhawks in the first half came in the first 20 minutes of play. Brittany Russo took five of the visiting shots in the opening half, but Sam Whitney stood up to the test each time and made the saves.
 
The Panthers also had multiple opportunities to score in the opening half, but the seventh shot proved to be the difference as Masiello scored unassisted in the 35th minute of off a loose ball from the top of the box. Late in the half, it appeared as though the visitors had tied up the contest off a corner kick by Russo, but they were ruled offsides.
 
The Panthers wasted no time in padding their lead in the second half. In the 54th minute, Alison Gronenthal took a cross from Aimee Goldstein, and a shot that was saved by Jill Carlson, but both the keeper and ball rolled just over the line for the goal.
 
In the 64th UMass Lowell's Gia O'Connor and keeper Carlson had a miscommunication as O'Conner tapped a pass back to her goalie, but Carlson was heading in the opposite direction which resulted in an own goal, giving Adelphi a 3-0 lead.
 
The Panthers put the nail in the coffin five minutes later in the 69th minute, on a textbook header by Sarah Cote off of a corner by Masiello, sealed the win for the Panthers.
 
Overall, the Panthers out-shot the Riverhawks 14 to 12 and also led nine to six in shots on goal. Whitney picked up six saves in the win.
 
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, September 18th as they travel to Albany, N.Y. to face off against the defending Northeast-10 and NCAA champions, the Saint Rose Golden Knights.
