NCAA East Regional 2 Championship Central
Garden City, N.Y. - For the first time in four years the Adelphi University softball team will take the field in NCAA Division II Tournament action, when they step on the diamond at 3:30 pm today, against second seeded Molloy College. All contests for the lower half of the East Regional bracket will take place on the campus of LIU-C.W. Post.
The seventh seeded Panthers enter today's game with an overall record of 34-18-1 and are coming off their best finish in the Northeast-10, placing second overall with a mark of 22-8. Adelphi is also hot at the right time, posting 10 wins in their last 13 games, including sweeps in four of their last seven double headers.
The other members of the lower half of the East Regional bracket are #2 Molloy (42-10), #3 C.W. Post (37-20) and #6 Dominican (37-15). The Panthers are 25-9 against their first round opponent Molloy, with their last meeting coming back in May of 2009 and the Lions came out on top, 2-0. However, earlier that year Adelphi swept Molloy by scores of 11-2 and 7-2 in Rockville Centre.
The Brown and Gold have been less successful against the third seeded Pioneers, as C.W. Post holds the edge in the all-time series 19-43, including two wins earlier this year, 11-1 and 6-4. Adelphi last win against the Pioneers came on April 19, 2009 when the Panthers used an offensive explosion to secure a 9-0 win.
Adelphi holds the upper hand in the all-time series against the sixth seed Dominican College, 7-1 and the two teams most recently played in 2010, splitting a double header with the Panthers coming out on top in game one 8-2, while the Chargers took game two, 6-0.
