North Andover, MA - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to North Andover, Massachussetts to take on Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 double header. The Panthers picked up wins of 6-2 and 5-2, sinking the Warriors to 9-16 on the season and 3-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while improve to 20-11-1 overall and 11-5 in league action.
Game One
In game one, the Warriors claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame as single up the middle brought home the first run of the contest. Adelphi answered with its first run of the day to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the second, when Victoria Wink hit a lead-off homer to level the contest.
Merrimack restored its lead to one run with a tally in the bottom of the third inning, with a home run of their own over center, 2-1.The Panthers responded by capturing their first lead of the day in the top of the sixth. Meghan Heiser led off with a home run to tie the game at 2-2. Then Wink gave the Adelphi the lead as she scored on a wild pitch to lift the Panthers to a 3-2 advantage.
Adelphi added three runs in the seventh to double its total to six and take a 6-2 lead. Wink singled down the left field line to drive in her second RBI of the contest and Katie Andrews followed with a two-run home run to cap off the scoring.
Devon Kelly tossed five innings of four hit, two run softball to collect the win, while Andrews came on in relief and provided two innings of scoreless softball to secure the win for Adelphi.
Wink swung the bat well for Adelphi, going 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Andrews was 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored Jeanine Leo, Emily Dorko, Kayla Reiger and Heiser all collected one hit each in the win.
Game Two
The Panthers seized an early 3-0 lead in the nightcap with three runs in the top of the first. Andrews got the Panthers on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring Dorko. Jacklyn Binstock reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Kayla Rieger to score from third with one out and Elizabeth Linder drove in Adelphi's third run of the frame with a groundout.
Merrimack got a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning and cut the deficit to two, 3-1. But, Binstock landed a single to left center to drive in Andrews from third and restore the Panthers' lead to three, 4-1, in the top of the third frame.
Merrimack responded with a score in the home half of the fourth to slice the Adelphi's advantage to two, 4-2. However, Adelphi extended its lead back to three in the top of the fifth as Linder's sacrifice fly to center allowed Wink to tag up and score from third base.
Andrews threw five innings to pick up the win, striking out six and giving up just three hits, while Laurin Watts tossed two innings of one hit relief, striking out four to secure the victory for Adelphi.
Kayla Rieger was 3-4 at the plate, to lead the Adelphi offense, while Emily Dorko was 2-4 with a run scored. Heiser was 2-3, while Jaclyn Binstock was 2-4 with two RBI. Lindner also drove in two runs and was 1-3 on the day.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 7, when they travel to Lowell, Massachusetts to take on UMass-Lowell in a double header starting at noon.
