Worcester, MA – Earlier this evening, the #5 ranked men's lacrosse team took on the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference Contest. The Panthers got the ball rolling early on and held a comfortable eight goal lead by the half. Another five-goal third period extended the lead and when all was said and done, the stickmen came out on top 16-4. With the win, Adelphi advances to 10-2, 6-2 NE-10 while Assumption drops to 2-9, 1-6 Ne-10.
In the first, Adelphi scored four goals off the sticks of
Joseph Sciara,
Vinny Coiro and
Timothy Aiello. Sciara kicked the game off with his first score of the season while Coiro struck on back-to-back attempts with the second coming from a
Ken Fundus feed. Aiello capped the four-goal run with his first of two goals in the game.
The senior duo of
Joe Vitale and
Danny Blau combined for eight points in the win. Vitale had an even split of his four while Blau notched three goals to go along with an assist. They each put in a goal in the second while Vitale added another in the third with Blau tacking on two in the same period.
Kieran Riegel and
Joe Celano also added two goals, each finding the back of the cage in the second and third periods.
Jeff Melsopp and
Nick Olson rounded out the final two goals of the game in the fourth period.
Shane Wynn,
Ken Fundus, Doug Quedna and
Kevin Kennedy all registered an assist, marking a total of 15 Panthers tallying at least one point in the game. Faceoff man Greg Puskuldjian continued to show why he sits at the top of the national ranks in winning percentage as he was successful in 15 of 16 faceoffs.
Cage minder,
Eric Janssen recorded his 10
th win as he saw 30 minutes of action, allowed just one goal and made two saves. Capable backup, Adian Bennardo had a busy outing in his 26:08 minutes, making seven saves while allowing two goals.
Keith McDermott also saw some time and made two saves and allowed two goals.
The Greyhound's Garrett Smith earned two goals in the loss while Tom Guido and Gordon Champlin chipped in with Assumption's only two other goals. Will Contento logged 48:45 in net, allowed 15 goals and made 10 saves in the loss.
As a team, the Panthers outshot the hosts, 51-30, picked up 47 ground balls and made 16 successful clears on 22 attempts. They were 5-7 on extra man opportunities.
