Kissimmee, Florida - The Adelphi University softball team took on #10 Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a rematch of their rain shortened tie on March 12 in Kissimmee, Florida. The Panthers jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but could not hold on, falling 8-7 in eight innings. The loss gives both teams identical, 2-3-1 overall records.
The Panthers got things started early, putting their first two hitters on the bases and the first run scored when
Emily Dorko took off for home after an attempt to pick her off at third. Amy Ogden drove in Adelphi's second run of the inning with a single to short and
Laurin Watts brought in two more runs with another single to short, giving the Brown and Gold a 4-0 lead, just three outs into the game.
IUP responded in the second with three runs, getting the first two on a double to left center and the third run on a ground out, pulling Crimson Hawks to within one, 4-3. Adelphi pushed the lead back to four runs, 7-3, in the fourth when
Kayla Rieger tripled to left center and then crossed home on an IUP miscue. Three batters later
Jeanine Leo hit a bomb to straight away center, that cleared the fence and scored to runs.
The Crimson Hawks got one run back in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to center and got three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on two illegal pitches and a single to left center, knotting the game at seven all.
The score remained 7-7, until the eighth when IUP loaded the bases and then scored the winning run on a single to third base, giving the Crimson Hawks the 8-7 victory.
Watts tossed the first four innings of the game, striking out two and giving up five earned runs, while
Devon Kelly threw seven innings of relief, strking out two and giving up just one run.
Heather Salerno was hot at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored while Watts was 1-2 with two RBI and Leo was 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, March 13 in Kissimmee, Florida with games against Minnesota State - Moorhead and Slippery Rock.
