Softball Drops St. Cloud, Falls to California (PA)

The Panthers hammered out 10 hits against St. Cloud, but were held hitless against Cal.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Florida - The Adelphi University softball team continued their slate of games on Saturday, March 10 with contests against St. Cloud State University and California-Pennsylvania. The Panthers pounded out 10 hits in a, 4-2 win over St. Cloud, but went cold in a, 7-0 loss to Cal (PA), leaving Adelphi with a 2-2 overall record.

The Panthers started hot against the Huskies, with Emily Dorko gaining first on a bunt, second on an error and being moved to third on a Heather Salerno sacrifice. Then a perfectly executed bunt, from Jeanine Leo plated Dorko, putting Adelphi up, 1-0, just three outs into the game.

St. Cloud answered right back in the bottom of the first, loading the bases on a hit batter, single and a walk, and knotting the score at one on a wild pitch. The game would remain tied at one, until the third when Adelphi scored three runs on four hits. Kayleigh Rieger got things started, scoring on a passed ball, after reaching on a single. Leo brought Dorko home for the second time with a bunt and then scored on an Amanda Krier single, after stealing second to give the Panthers a 4-1 edge.

The Huskies rallied in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases, but could only muster one run, as Devon Kelly struck out three of the four batters she faced in the inning, ending the threat. Adelphi would threaten in the ensuing innings, but could not bring any more runs across home plate, winning 4-2.

Natalie Camarda started the game for Adelphi with two innings of three hit, two run and four strikeout softball. Kelly was credited with her second win of the season, tossing five innings, allowing no runs, one hit and striking out four.

Offensively Adelphi was led by Dorko and Leo. Dorko was 3-4 with two runs scored, while Leo was 2-3 with two a run scored and two RBI. Krier also swung a hot bat, going 2-4 with an RBI.

Adelphi vs. California (PA)

This game looked to be a pitchers dual, as the score was 2-0 thru four innings of play. Starting pitcher Laurin Watts mowed down hitters in the first 3.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing two runs, but she also gave up seven hits.

Then Cal (PA) erupted, scoring five runs in the fifth on six hits, including getting the final three runs on a three run home run to left field, which made the score 7-0. From that point, Hope Spancake took over, not giving up a single hit, as she threw seven innings of flawless softball, striking out 11.

Katie Andrews threw one inning of relief for the Panthers, allowing five runs on five hits, while stroking out one and Kelly made an appearance, tossing the final 2.1 innings, striking out three and giving up just one hit.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, March 11 when they take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 9:00 am and Wayne State College at 11:00 am.
