Millsboro, Del. - The Adelphi University women's bowling team finished in sixth place in a field of 18 teams at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic on Sunday. The Panthers went 1-2 in the final day of best-of-seven Baker matches to complete the weekend with a 9-4 record.
The ladies started the day in dramatic fashion against Sam Houston State University, jumping out to an early 3-0 game advantage and looking to close out the Bearcats early. SHSU rallied back and claimed the next three games and evened the match at 3-3. The squad then fired off a 204 effort, ending the match 204-178 in game seven.
The Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights tried to make easy work of the Panthers in the next match as they ran out to a 3-0 lead. Adelphi then fired seven straight strikes to start game five and capture the next two games, 244-199 and 200-188. Two open frames led to the Panthers demise in game six, however, with a score of 239-202 ending the match 4-2.
Adelphi then fell to the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin as they exacted some revenge from a day two loss to the Panthers. Adelphi fell despite a 233-pin game two effort and lost in five games, 4-1.
The team now stands at 34-11 on the season and await the release of the first National Tenpin Coaches Association ranking poll of the year. The Panthers will be on hiatus until the Kutztown Invitational in January 25, 2013.
