Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The #2 seeded Adelphi University volleyball team got off the bus in West Haven, Connecticut on Saturday, November 17 and walked into Charger Gym to take on top seeded New Haven in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The defending champion Panthers were returning to the title match for the second year in a row, while the Chargers were back after a one year hiatus. Adelphi would fall in four games to the Chargers (20-25, 19-25, 25-18, 18-25) and are now 24-11 overall on the season.
Chelsea Overholt led the way for Adelphi with 14 kills and 22 digs, while
Kaitlyn DeStefano added eight and
Emily Dorko and
Haley Blunt had seven kills each.
Bianca Hernandez totaled 18 digs and
Alexandra Kahen collected 13.
Katie Bryson led all players with 43 assists and added 12 digs to her stat line.
The Chargers moved out to leads of 5-1, 11-6 and 16-12 in the first game, but each time the Panthers battled back. The final time Bryson knotted the play at 20 all with a kill, but New Haven responded with a kill of their own that sent the Chargers on a 5-0 run that handed the Brown and Gold a 25-20 game one loss.
Adelphi took their first lead of the contest in the second set on an Overholt kill that put the Panthers up 3-2, but New Have answered the challenge with a 7-1 run that put the Brown and Gold in a five point hole, 9-4. Adelphi showed plenty of fight, pulling to within two points late, when an
Emily Dorko kill made the score 20-18, but the Chargers would reel off five of the final six points for a 25-19 win and a 2-0 cushion in the match.
The third game opened similar to the first two, with the Chargers taking control 7-4. However, The Panthers put together an 10-1 run that was capped by a Bryson kill and put Adelphi in the driver's seat with a 14-8 lead. The Panthers won several key long rallies late in the set, including one at 21-16 that ended in an Overholt kill, forcing a second time out from New Haven and set Adelphi up for a 25-18 victory and pushed the contest to a fourth game.
The host Chargers moved out to an 11-7 lead in the fourth set and then extended that to 18-11 with a 7-4 spurt. Adelphi kept pushing, trailing 24-14 they ripped off four straight points before dropping the fourth and final set, 25-18 and the match three games to one.
Adelphi reached their second straight Northeast-10 Tournament Championship game and Overholt was honored as an All-Tournament selection for her play during the Championship.
The Panthers will likely return to action on Thursday, November 29 when they participate in the NCAA Division II East Regional for the sixth straight season. Adelphi's game time, opponent and seed will be announced live at NCAA.com on Sunday, November 18 at 10:00 pm.
