Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Adelphi University women's bowling team went 10-2 over three days of competition to finish in third place at the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcat Invitational. The Panthers trailed only Fairleigh Dickinson University and Sam Houston State and saw two bowlers land on the All-Tournament Team in senior
Samantha Morlack and sophomore
Kathryn Rivera. Adelphi now stands at 20-3 overall on the season.
During day two, the Panthers secured third place going into the step ladder finals with a strong 5-0 performance in team play. Adelphi started the day by defeating Sam Houston State University by 152 pins, 967-815. The Panthers were lead by Rivera (214),
Michele Fitzpatrick (207) and
Holly Zink (202) as the trio of talented sophomores took an early and commanding lead.
The ladies of Southern University battled the Panthers early but Rivera (255) and Morlack (204) helped Adelphi post a 91 pin win, 929-838. The Aggies of Prairie View A&M were next on the card and the Panthers fired an even paced effort to claim the 86 pin win, 886-800.
Next up were the Bears of Morgan State, who have played many fine matches against the Panthers over the years. The Bears had a 220, 198, and 195 effort but were unable to stave off the Adelphi attack as Morlack (230) and Zink (211) propelled the Panthers to a 147 victory, 960-813. The final match of the day saw the Panthers down the Green Wave of Tulane University by a staggering 226 pins in the 925-699 win. Rivera capped an outstanding day with another 200 pin effort and Morlack rolled in a 212 game.
Entering day three, the Panthers entered the step ladder finals in third place and faced Northeast Conference rivals Monmouth University in the first round of best of seven Baker matches. Adelphi dropped game one 182-164 but rallied back to sweep the next four games and claim the match four games to one with scores of 258, 209, 249 and 227.
The Panthers then faced eventual-tournament champs Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights ran out to an early 2-0 lead but Adelphi rallied back taking games three and four to even the match. FDU took game five and with their backs to the wall, the Panthers were unable to match FDU's fire power, falling in a deciding game six. Finally, the Panthers took on the host Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats. The squad responded in convincing fashion, firing 238, 194, 213 and 212 efforts to down the Wildcats 4-0.
Adelphi returns to action next weekend at the three-day Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational in Elmwood Park, N.J.
