Field Hockey Falls to Merrimack in NE-10 Semis, 6-0

Panthers finish season 8-12 after historic midseason turnaround

Box Score

North Andover, Mass. - The Adelphi University field hockey team fell to top-seeded Merrimack College 6-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals on Saturday, finishing the 2012 season with an 8-12 overall record. After opening the season with eight consecutive losses, the Panthers managed to win seven of their next 10 games to secure the fourth seed in the postseason and made it to the NE-10 Semifinals for the first time since 2009.

Merrimack will take on third-seeded UMass Lowell in the NE-10 Championship game tomorrow at 12 p.m.

The Warriors used an explosive scoring surge late in the first half to score three times in a span of 3:20. Jamie Spano scored Merrimack's first goal and April Daugherty scored back-to-back goals just two minutes apart to give the hosts a 3-0 lead going into halftime. The Warriors carried that momentum into the second half, as Candace Waldie potted a goal just over three minutes after play resumed to make it a four goal advantage.

Jen Otis and Katrina Squeri added insurance goals which proved more than enough to secure Merrimack's second straight trip to the NE-10 finals. The Warriors outshot Adelphi 28-12 and took nine corners to the Panthers' four.

Cassie Cabral, Molly Cuevas and Erin Grekin each took two shots on goal for the Panthers, but offensive opportunities proved illusive against the tough Merrimack defense and NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year Kerri Bergquist. The Warriors' goalie stopped all seven shots she faced, while Kristine Puzio made 11 saves for Adelphi.
