Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the Adelphi University women's soccer team took on the Dolphins of Le Moyne College in a Northeast-10 conference contest. Kaitiln Monteith's team leading eighth goal opened the scoring for the Panthers and gave the Brown and Gold a lead they would never relinquish.
Olivia Czavar added an insurance goal, her fourth of the season, late in the second half to give the Panthers a 2-0 win. The Panthers improve to 9-4-2 on the season and 6-4-2 in NE-10 play while the Dolphins drop to 2-8-4 and 0-8-4 in the conference.
The Panthers struck early as the first shot for either team came in the seventh minute; Monteith took a header off a pass from
Amanda Reverberi that beat the diving Tori Casaro to her right, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers had multiple chances to double their lead in the half but couldn't find the back of the net. In the 21
st minute, a strong shot from Masiello was met by Casaro, meanwhile a header from Reverberi off of a corner from Masiello drifted just wide right.
Later in the 23
rd minute, Monteith fed a left cross to
Alison Gronenthal, but her shot bounced off the right post. The Panthers dominated ball possession and pace of play in the opening half while their defense held strong, keeping the Syracuse based team shot less.
The second half proved to have more momentum changes, as Le Moyne finally managed to get three shots off early in the half; one missed wide left and shots by Lindsay Bakal and Kate Deasy were both saved by
Sam Whitney.
The Panthers also had multiple opportunities to pad their lead but attempts by
Emily Masiello, Gronenthal,
Cathleen Reardon and
Olivia Czavar were all denied by diving saves. The Panthers put the icing on the cake late in the game as Czavar fired a shot into the back of the net off of a rebound from a previous shot taken by Monteith in the 87
th minute.
Overall, the Panthers dominated in all offensive categories, outshooting the Dolphins 22-5, and led 13-3 in shots on goal. Monteith took seven of the shots for the Panthers, while Bakal took two for the Dolphins. The Panthers also held an 11-4 advantage in corners; Whitney made three saves for the win while her counterpart Casaro made 11 in the loss.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 20 when they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to take on Merrimack College for a Northeast-10 conference contest at 6pm. You can follow along with
