Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University field hockey team earned its seventh win in nine games with a 2-0 shutout of American International College on Tuesday evening on Motamed Field. The Panthers improve to 7-10 overall and 6-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in league action.
A goal in each half proved the difference for the hosts, who avenged a non-conference loss at AIC earlier in the season. Despite being outshot 12-7 and outcornered 7-3, the Panthers made their shots count in the team's third shutout victory of the season.
Senior
Alyssa Conklin put the Panthers in front early with her first goal of the season. Classmate
Cassie Cabral dribbled the ball down the right sideline and chopped a pass through the Yellow Jacket defense, putting Conklin in position to clank the ball off the back of the cage.
Conklin's marker would stand up for the rest of the half, and despite being outshot by the visitors 7-1, Adelphi possessed a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The two squads proceeded to play over 40 scoreless minutes of field hockey, but junior
Jamie Ackerman finally broke the silence in the 53rd minute.
Molly Cuevas initiated a penalty corner from the sideline, and senior
Emilee Rahner made the block and pushed a sneaky pass under the stick of a lunging defender. Ackerman unleashed a thunderous shot that burned through the defensive formation and put Adelphi up 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets' best opportunity came with just under five minutes to play when Kristen Angeletti sparked a breakaway down the right sideline. Angeletti took a sharp angle toward the goal and tried to flick a shot past
Kristine Puzio's stick side, but the goalie went into a slide and knocked the ball out of harm's way.
Puzio made seven saves in the contest, while AIC keeper Kori Huffman stopped a pair of shots.
The Panthers close out the regular season on Satuday when they host Merrimack College at 1 p.m.
