Box Score Easton, Mass. - Junior
Jamie Ackerman scored the game-winning goal 11 minutes and seven seconds into overtime to lift the Adelphi University field hockey team to a dramatic 3-2 win over 10th-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday. The Panthers rise to 6-10 overall and 5-3 in NE-10 play, while the Skyhawks move to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Ackerman had a hand in all three Adelphi goals, assisting on first half scores by senior
Cassie Cabral and freshman
Kristen Bagley. Cabral deflected Ackerman's drive from atop the circle to put the Panthers on the board in the 16th minute, and Bagley doubled the lead with a one-timer from the right side of the arc in the 21st minute.
Stonehill nearly had nothing to show for seven first half shots, but Emily Sideris connected with just over two minutes left in the first period to halve the deficit. Sideris one-timed a rebound and took advantage of the open right side after Adelphi goalie
Kristine Puzio committed to stop Devin Ingersoll's initial shot.
It looked as though the Panthers would withstand late pressure by the Skyhawks and escape with a 2-1 win in regulation, but Erika Kelly would not be contained as she knocked in a breakaway goal with just three seconds to spare in the second half. An intercepted clear at midfield gave Kelly a clean look at the goal, allowing her to convert the score and push the game to overtime.
The Skyhawks poured on the offensive attack in the extra period, firing off 10 shots in 11 minutes, but Ackerman low liner proved the deciding factor. The junior's third goal of the season gives the Panthers their sixth win in eight games, pushing Adelphi to two games over .500 in NE-10 play after starting the season on an eight-game losing streak.
Puzio stopped 13 shots in the victory, while Kaitlyn Curtis made three saves for Stonehill.
Adelphi hosts in its final two games of the regular season this week, beginning with American International College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
