Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University field hockey team rattled off four goals to defeat Mercy College 4-1 at Motamed Field on Saturday. Senior Julianne Gerbino scored two goals and added an assist to lift the Panthers to 1-1 on the season.

The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead on goals by seniors Crystal Gray and Gerbino. Gray positioned herself in front of the crease and redirected a pass from Heimerle at 32:23 for Adelphi's first goal, and Gerbino knocked in a pass after senior Jeanette Heirmele  used a slick move along the goal line to maneuver around her defender and deliver a cross pass at 26:23.

The Mavericks halved the deficit at the 7:33 mark when Andrea Licostie successfully converted a penalty stroke. Licostie flipped a one-bounce shot to the left corner of the goal, just past the dive of Adelphi senior goalie Lucia Vigliotti.

The 2-1 score lasted well into the second half, but junior Cassie Cabral chopped in a breakaway after a slick pass by Gerbino on a 2-on-1 breakaway to make it 3-1 Panthers. Gerbino notched her second goal of the game with 5:43 to play when she slapped in her own rebound from the right side.

Adelphi returns to action on Sept. 6 when the Panthers head to Franklin Pierce for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
