New Rochelle, N.Y. -
The men's soccer team took on the Gaels of Iona College earlier today in a non-conference contest. After a scoreless first, Iona broke the silence just six minutes into the second 45 minutes of play and then added an insurance goal in the final minute of the game while keeping the Panthers at bay and serving them a 2-0 loss. With the loss, Adelphi slips to 1-4 while the Gaels advance to 6-1.

The first half was played to a deadlock with the Panthers being outshot 12-4 and having one less corner kick, 2-1. At the 13:52 mark, Adelphi came dangerously close to getting on the scoreboard when Issa Tall fired a shot only to hit the crossbar. Freshman keeper Christopher Herrera was tested but held strong, making three saves in the half.

Less than six minutes into the second half, Mario Di Miceli put Iona ahead with his first goal of the season on pass from Franklin Castellanos. With time running down, the Panthers only managed to get two shots off in the final 16 minutes, but the attempts were blocked by the defense and stopped by Iona keeper, Borja Barbero.

With less than 40 seconds remaining, the Gaels added one more goal before closing out the game as Alexander Abdalla sent a pass downfield to Ansger Otto who beat Herrera for the second goal of the game.

Herrera made six saves in the loss. The Panthers lost the statistical battle, being outshot 23-9 and out cornered, 3-2.

They return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Vestal, New York to take on the Bearcats of Binghampton University for a 7pm contest.
