Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team dropped its third straight game with a 3-0 loss to American International College on Motamed Field on Tuesday. The Panthers outshot and outcornered the Yellow Jackets but could not pierce the tough AIC defense in the non-conference game.
AIC freshman Jenna Masionis offered a standout performance with two goals that would put her team in position to win. Masionis struck early by knocking in her own rebound just over two minutes into the game, and made it 2-0 early in the second half by navigating her way through the Adelphi defense and sneaking a wrist shot past Panther goalie
Lucia Vigliotti.
Junior Kristen Angeletti put AIC up three with a breakaway goal in the 58th minute after a perfect leading pass from Masionis that found Angeletti blazing past the Adelphi defenders.
The Panthers scrambled to assemble a comeback and clawed back with a goal by junior
Emilee Rahner with four minutes to play. Rahner bounced a high lofting shot over the head of AIC goalie Kim Steiner after a penalty corner pass from sophomore
Jami DeGrote, but that would be all the Panthers would get despite attempting five shots on three penalty corners in the final three minutes.
The Yellow Jackets, who improve to 4-3 with the win, trailed the Panthers in shots (23-17) and penalty corners (13-8) and leaned on Steiner's relentless goalkeeping and seven saves. Vigliotti also made seven saves for the Panthers, who drop to 4-4.
Adelphi resumes Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday when the Panthers travel to Bentley for a game at 1 p.m.
