Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University field hockey team continued their dominant play with a 6-0 win over Assumption College in the team's Northeast-10 Conference opener at Motamed Field on Saturday. Five different players found the back of the cage, and senior Jeanette Heimerle led the way with two goals and two assists in Adelphi's third straight win. The Panthers (3-1, 1-0 NE-10) have now outscored their opponents 15-2 in the past three games.

Along with Heimerle, seniors Crystal Gray and Julianne Gerbino and juniors Cassie Cabral and Emilee Rahner all scored a goal to help the Panthers shut out the Greyhounds.

Shots on goal were hard to come by early in the first half, but Heimerle finally connected on a one-timer off a centering pass from Cabral in the 25th minute. The senior All-American lept between two defenders to get to Cabral's sharp feed from the right goal line and put the Panthers up 1-0.

Cabral and Heimerle connected again just seven minutes later, this time with a back pass from Heimerle that found Cabral wide open with plenty of time to wind up and fire a bullet into the back of the cage.

Heimerle picked up where she left off in the second half and widened the lead to 3-0 as she gathered a leading pass by senior Jessica Mulhern on a two-on-one breakaway and beat the goalie stickside.

Gerbino later orchestrated a flawless give-and-go maneuver as she and Heimerle streaked down the middle of the field on the attack. Gerbino led Heimerle with a quick pass to the right side, blazed toward the left post and pushed the ball through for the team's fourth goal after a precise pass from Heimerle.

In the 62nd minute, Gray took advantage of a crowded box and flicked a bouncing shot from a tough angle on the right goal line that trickled through and slipped past Assumption goalie Kristen Manchester. Less than five minutes later, Rahner notched an equally crafty goal by chopping a high bouncing shot that arched just over the reach of a leaping Manchester.

Adelphi senior goalie Lucia Vigliotti picked up her first shutout of the season, made one save and went largely unchallenged thanks to a  tenacious Panther defense. Manchester stopped 10 shots for the Greyhounds (0-3, 0-1 NE-10).

The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they host Saint Michael's College in a non-conference contest at 1 p.m.
