Garden City, N.Y.
– The field hockey team opened up their 2011 campaign earlier today with a game against the #3 Huskies of Bloomsburg University. After a scoreless 37 minutes, the Panthers got on the board early in the second half with a goal by senior All-American, Jeanette Heimerle. However, the Huskies answered back with three unanswered goals, taking the win. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 0-1 while Bloomsburg moves to 1-0.

The Huskies dominated the offensive end of the game in the first half, outshooting Adelphi 14-2 and having the upper hand in penalty corners, 10-0. Panther goalie, senior Lucia Vigliotti kept very busy in net and was tested throughout the first half, but remained solid, holding the opposition to zero.

In the second half, the Panthers struck first at the 38:01 mark when Jamie Ackerman sent a pass to Heimerle who sailed shot past Bloomsburg goalie, Meghan Hollenbach to notch the first goal of the game. Adelphi would remain in the lead for a little under 11 minutes before Bloomsburg knotted the game at one on an Amanda Riley goal at 48:50.

The Huskies went ahead in the 64th minute when Brittany Mathews, on a feed from Riley, scored the go ahead goal. Less than two minutes later, they added insurance to that when Jaclyn Beasley scored the game's final goal, securing the 3-1 victory.

The Panthers were outshot 31-3 in the game and only had one penalty corner compared to Bloomsburg's 20. Vigliotti made 14 stops in the loss while Hollenbach made one for the Huskies.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 3 when they host the Mavericks of Mercy College at 1pm on Motamed Field.
