The Adelphi University softball team concluded play in the Northeast-10 Championship on Sunday, May 8 in Worcester, Massachusetts with a, 4-2 loss to second seeded Southern Connecticut State. The sixth seeded Panthers knotted the game at two in the bottom of the seventh, but an Owl home run and RBI double in the eighth put the game out of reach. With the loss Adelphi now sits at 29-25 overall.
The owls kicked things off in the top of the third, opening the inning with back-to-back doubles to score one run and added another one batter later with a single, 2-0. The Panthers cut the lead in half, 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, when Amy Ogden singled home Paige Rhodes, who reached earlier in the inning on a walk.
Adelphi came all the way back and tied the game at two all in the bottom of the seventh, when a Katie Andrews bomb to left field forced extra innings, 2-2. Southern Connecticut led off the extra frame with a home run of their own to take a quick, 3-2 lead and then pushed the margin to, 4-2 on a two out double.
The Panthers brought the tying run to the plate when Amanda Krier was hit by a pitch and Jeanine Leo came to the plate with two out, but Leo struck out, ending the contest.
Andrews threw two innings, striking out four, walking run and giving up two runs, while Leighann Bell tossed six innings of relief. Bell struck out five, walked none and gave up just four hits in the loss.
Offensively, both Andres (2-3) and Ogden (2-4) each managed two hits, and each drove in one run.
The Panthers will now wait to see if they earn inclusion in the NCAA Division II East Regional, with the field announced on Monday, May 9 at 10:00 am on NCAA.com.
