The Panthers took on the Warriors of Merrimack College today at Marois Field in the second round of the Northeast-10 Tournament. Adelphi got on the board first with a run to open up the game but were held there as the Warriors responded with two runs of their own and then tacked on another two in the third to take a 4-1 lead. With the loss, the Panthers move to 28-24 while Merrimack bumps up to 26-18.
Emily Dorko reached base safely on a bunt to kick off the game and then stole second, getting herself into scoring position early on. Amy Ogden advanced her to third on a sac bunt which brought up senior Shay Craig with an opportunity to get her team on the board. She delivered, reaching on a fielder's choice single to score Dorko and put the Panthers up 1-0.
The lead was short lived with Merrimack loading the bases in the bottom of the first and notching their first run when Monique Gosselin was hit by a pitch, scoring leadoff batter Kristen LeMay. Kara Melillo singled to drive in the second run of the inning. With the bases still juiced, Panther hurler, Leighann Bell, recorded a strikeout for the first out. A heads up play by Craig got the lead runner out at the plate for the second out and then a ground out ended the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Monet Perry had a two RBI single, increasing Merrimack's lead to three. The Panthers would not be able to respond and the game would end 4-1.
Deandra Leo had two of Adelphi's four hits while Bell tossed five innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while fanning three. Deardorff went the distance for Merrimack, giving up just one run on four hits.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, May 7 at 9am when they take on the winner of the New Haven/Assumption game which will be determined later today.
